Wexford’s Theatre Royal was perhaps the town’s most extraordinary building. It was built in 1830 by an enterprising auctioneer and newspaperman to a horse shoe design. On offer were opera, pantomime, ballet, drama and concerts, boxing tournaments, lectures and auctions. Wexford developed a taste for musical drama and much local talent took to the footlights.

Wexford Opera House, built on the original site of the Theatre Royal in 2008, is Ireland’s first custom built, multi-purpose opera house. The John and Aileen O’Reilly Theatre has a seating capacity of 769 (when the orchestra pit is in use) and 853 seats up to proscenium. The auditorium layout is a stall and two tiers arrangement. The highlight of the auditorium, visually, is the American Black Walnut lining.

The stage performance area, compared to the Theatre Royal, has increased in size by 130%. The stage is flat, with traditional proscenium, and an optional forestage or orchestra pit. There is a rear stage scene dock and six control booths on two levels.

Jerome Hynes Theatre

For a more intimate space, the Jerome Hynes Theatre is a black box theatre that offers great versatility. The total seating capacity of this theatre is 172, and the seats are retractable (bar a small number in the balcony).
